IceHL Hawaii: Logo Selection, Final Round

This is it for the Hawaii Honu logo design bracket!

Many talented artists have contributed great time and energy into making this the best pool of logo designs for any IceHL team yet. Regardless of who wins, I have to send out my huge thanks to everyone participating!

Our bracket began with 20 logo packages submitted by 18 designers. Through a series of polls we're down to the final pair. The winner of this last poll will go on to represent the Honu franchise.

Best of luck to our final two designers! Results are hidden until the bracket closes on Thursday night. Happy voting!

The winning logo set will be revealed Friday. The jersey design submission process will then begin over the weekend and run through the end of next week. More details to come.

IceHL World: Div. A Logo Selection, Round 1

divA-logos-brkt1.jpg

Is it just me or is our IceHL World project just flying by this summer? It's already time to choose logos for our Division A teams!

The brackets look a little odd because I received varying numbers of logo entries for each team. The Cosmonauts have 10, the Samurai have 7, and the Hammers have 9.

Because of the uneven brackets, I've had to play with how the first few rounds of voting work so that every team is involved in every round. If you look at the bracket above, the match-ups with a blue box are featured in this round.

Results are hidden until polls close. This round ends Wednesday night. Happy voting!

By the way, don't forget about the Quebec Armada. Since voters chose to keep the team's existing branding, we haven't seen much of them lately. However, we will be redesigning their uniforms in the next phase of the project.

IceHL World: Div. B Name Selection, Round 2

Voting continues in the IceHL World Division B name brackets!

Each team started with eight names suggested by Icethetics readers. Now, your votes will determine the winners!

IceHL Hawaii: Logo Selection, Round 4

The Hawaii Honu logo design bracket reaches its penultimate round!

Many talented artists have contributed time and energy into making this the best pool of logo designs for any IceHL team yet. Regardless of who wins, again I have to send out my huge thanks to everyone participating!

Our bracket began with 20 logo packages submitted by 18 designers. Through a series of polls we're down to the final four on our way to eliminating all but one — which will go on to represent the Honu as the team's official branding.

IceHL Hawaii: Logo Selection, Round 2

The Hawaii Honu logo design bracket continues!

Our bracket consists of 20 logo packages submitted by 18 designers. Over the next two weeks, a series of polls will eliminate all but one, which will go on to represent the Honu as the team's official branding.

IceHL World: Name Nominations, Division B

Right now, some excellent logo designs are being submitted for the IceHL World's Division A teams. So while those keep rolling in, let's move on to selecting names for our Division B teams.

The following list should remind you of the four nations being represented and how you may consider to designate their locations when submitting your name ideas.

  • United Kingdom: England, Scotland, London, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast
  • Australia: Queensland, New South Wales, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane
  • Switzerland: Zurich, Geneva, Berne
  • Greece: Athens, Crete

Name Submission Rules

The following guidelines will help this process go smoothly:

  • Name nominations will be accepted in the comments area of this post.
  • Suggest names for the 4 teams in Div. B (United Kingdom, Australia, Switzerland, Greece).
  • Include a CITY and NICKNAME (ex.: Montreal Canadiens or New York Rangers). Stick to the larger cities in each country.
  • Team names should be in English. Names in local languages may be considered but an English translation must be provided.
  • Please enter only ONE team name per comment and a maximum of 3 nominations per user. (You may elaborate on your name idea within that comment.) Other users may then "vote up" your suggestion if they like it.
  • Vote up names you like by clicking the "heart" button that appears in the upper right corner of the comment when your cursor hovers over it.
  • AVOID DUPLICATES. Please read through what's been suggested before you post.
  • If you wish to comment on someone else's suggestion, please do it only by replying to their original comment. (Use the "reply" button that appears when your cursor hovers over it.)

The reason for the comment restrictions is to keep this page manageable. Comments will get out of control during the week if we don't have a few limitations. I will be monitoring the page and deleting extraneous comments as needed to keep things organized.

Voting Process

Just as before, we will use brackets to determine the each team's name. We will have a bracket of 8 names for each team. It's important you use the "heart" button on the names you like so I know which ones you guys most want to see included in the brackets.

Restrictions

You may NOT nominate a nickname if it is or has been used by:

  • any current or past IceHL team;
  • any current or past NHL team or any WHA team;
  • any current AHL, ECHL, NFL, MLB or NBA team;
  • or any European hockey or KHL team.

A quick Google search goes a long way. Make sure your idea is not already in use elsewhere.

In addition, names that are vulgar, make any direct pop culture references or serve only to be silly will be removed. Repetitive distractions may get you blocked from posting future comments anywhere on the website. If you're not here to help improve the league, your participation is not necessary.

I will also remove any other name nominations that are deemed to be unacceptable.

Submissions end June 25

One last note to bear in mind. Don't try so hard to find a name that "means something." In the past, some people have tried so hard to do that, they lose perspective on the fact that we're branding a hockey team. It should be something fans would want to scream at a game.

And most important... BE CREATIVE!

IceHL Hawaii: Logo Selection, Round 1

After a brief delay, I'm pleased to open the voting for the new Hawaii Honu logo!

I don't envy those of you voting. You have some extremely difficult decisions ahead. So many talented artists have contributed time and energy into making this the best pool of logo designs for any IceHL team yet.

Our bracket consists of 20 logo packages submitted by 18 designers. Over the next two weeks, a series of polls will eliminate all but one, which will go on to represent the Honu as the team's official branding.

Submit your Division A logo designs!

After a short delay, we are beginning the logo design process for the IceHL World!

To help get you started, I've put together some concept artwork that should serve as nothing more than a bit of inspiration to get your creative juices flowing.

With these billboards I'm not attempting to suggest any particular color palettes or design elements at all. Just wanted a flashy way of announcing the team names.

The final design decisions will be up to you!

The Moscow Cosmonauts join us as the IceHL's first Russian franchise.

Next we have the Osaka Samurai hailing from Japan.

And finally from Sweden come the Stockholm Hammers.

Now let's get this show on the road. Artists of all experience levels are welcome to submit their creations to represent these three IceHL franchises.

The Rules

There are a few ground rules in IceHL design contests, but they must be followed:

  • DO NOT STEAL ARTWORK. No copying or tracing. No clipart. No adapting existing designs. No "borrowing." Create something original and distinctive!
  • Entries must be submitted via email to icethetics@gmail.com.
  • Valid entries will include at least a PRIMARY LOGO and a WORDMARK. Secondary logos are at the designer's discretion.
  • Please submit vector artwork (PDF/AI/SVG) if at all possible as this will be helpful in creating graphics for the website as well as the IceHL yearbook. (I will also accept high-resolution JPG and PNG formats.)
  • Include your FIRST AND LAST NAME as well as your EMAIL ADDRESS on the actual artwork.
  • Finally, by submitting artwork, you agree to grant Icethetics rights to use it in conjunction with all IceHL-related projects and publications.

DEADLINE: Thursday, June 26

You have three full weeks to design and submit your work. Have fun and good luck! We'll begin voting on June 30 so if you end up needing a little extra time, please let me know as soon as possible.

Not a Designer? You can still help!

Maybe you lack the skills and talents needed to create a logo, but you have a great idea for a design. Try putting it into words. Describe your idea in the comments and maybe it'll help one of our designers who's struggling to come up with an idea. You may not get a design credit, but you can still be part of the process!

Good luck to everyone!
