Hawaii Honu Branding Revealed!

It was a month ago that Hawaii Honu logos designed by Joshua Benkelman were officially adopted by the new team. Now I'm pleased to announce the winning uniforms!

No one should be surprised to see Matt McElroy's name here again. His talents and creativity made a huge and immediate impact on the IceHL last summer when he designed the winning logos for five of the seven rebranded teams — the Steelcats, Aces, Snipers, Lumberjacks and Sentinels.

In fact, he is currently the only IceHL designer ever to design both the winning logo and uniform for a single team, doing so for the Philadelphia Aces. But his first design contest victory came two years ago when he created the top uniform design for the Northwest Narwhals expansion team in 2012.

Earlier this summer, Matt also designed the winning logo for the new Moscow Cosmonauts franchise. His jersey design is among the final eight in the jersey bracket.

Lastly, I want to congratulate Eric Westhaver, who had the second-place design for the Honu. I don't mind saying it was one of my personal favorites in a bracket that wasn't short on amazing work. Huge thank you to everyone who entered!

Submit your Hawaii Honu jersey designs

It was 81 days ago that the first polls were posted, the first step along the road to creating the Hawaii Honu and the logo you see above. Now we embark on the last phase of the project with the start of the jersey design contest.

THE RULES

  • Design 2 jerseys (light and dark) using team colors and logos provided. (Equipment such as socks, gloves and helmets is optional.)
  • Both jerseys must be in the same image file (PNG or PDF preferred).
  • Submit your final design to icethetics@gmail.com by July 11.
  • Include your first and last name and email address in the graphic you submit and the body of your email. (Your name will be displayed during voting but your email address will remain private.)
  • Most important: GET CREATIVE!

JERSEY DESIGN KIT

To enter the contest you will need to download the IceHL Jersey Design Kit. Click the blue button the right.

The Design Kit is a ZIP containing the following files:

  • 1 double jersey template (PNG)
  • 3 Hawaii Honu logos (primary, secondary and wordmark)

Unlike in past design contests, the template I am providing is strongly encouraged, but not required.

Designers may use any template they choose as long as the resulting image uses a 5x3 aspect ratio (preferably 1600x960 pixels) and includes these elements:

  • Two complete jerseys (front and back for both)
  • Full set of numbers and letters (make note of any fonts used)
  • Optional: socks, helmets, gloves and pants

Please note that the Hawaii Honu logos in the Design Kit are to be used only on jersey submissions. You may not use them for any other purpose.

Final note. Simply submitting your jersey design doesn't guarantee it will be included in the voting process. If it doesn't meet a certain level of quality, I'll give you the opportunity to try again as long as you meet the deadline. (But I always accept far more than I reject.)

How great is that?!

Congratulations to Joshua Benkelman! His logo package earned an impressive 61% of the vote in the final round of the logo selection bracket.

As a special treat for IceHL fans, you'll notice there's a logo in that group which was not part of the original set. While the contest was in progress, Joshua came up with an idea for a secondary logo. The unique volcano imagery will now be included in the Honu's official branding package.

Once again, thank you to everyone who participated in the creation of the Hawaii Honu — particularly the talented artists who submitted logo concepts. The contest may not have gone your way, but at least you now have an excellent piece for your portfolio.

IceHL Hawaii: Logo Selection, Final Round

This is it for the Hawaii Honu logo design bracket!

Many talented artists have contributed great time and energy into making this the best pool of logo designs for any IceHL team yet. Regardless of who wins, I have to send out my huge thanks to everyone participating!

Our bracket began with 20 logo packages submitted by 18 designers. Through a series of polls we're down to the final pair. The winner of this last poll will go on to represent the Honu franchise.

Best of luck to our final two designers! Results are hidden until the bracket closes on Thursday night. Happy voting!

The winning logo set will be revealed Friday. The jersey design submission process will then begin over the weekend and run through the end of next week. More details to come.
