Habs, Sens NHL 100 Classic jerseys revealed
Next month, on Dec. 16, the Ottawa Senators will host the Montreal Canadiens at Lansdowne Park for a unique outdoor game to close out the NHL's centennial celebrations. On Tuesday, the league revealed the special sweaters the teams will wear for the NHL 100 Classic.
The NHL describes jerseys as "simultaneously paying homage to the history of the NHL and the League's next 100 years." The silver infused into both sweaters was inspired by the NHL's 100th anniversary logo, which borrowed it from the NHL shield in use since 2005.
Both teams also have silver stripes on the sleeves, in which the years of their Stanley Cup championships are listed. In Ottawa's case, they're getting credited with the Cups won by the original Senators franchise from the early 20th century — some of which were won prior to the formation of the NHL. Montreal, meanwhile, has won 24 Stanley Cups over 101 years.
Here's a closer look at the detail of the Canadiens' jersey.
A "hanger effect" design in the collar reads in French: "nos bras meurtris vous tendent le flambeau" — apparently translating to, "to you from failing hands we throw the torch; be yours to hold it high." Seems like there aren't enough words for that, but then I don't know French.
Here are some details of the Senators' sweater.
Should be an interesting game. Maybe we'll do it again in another century. Or maybe in 2023 or 2025 when the Bruins, Blackhawks and Rangers reach their century marks.
