Bruins, Leafs highlight outdoor jersey news
First, the Boston Bruins announced today that they are replacing their third jersey — one of the longest-tenured in the NHL. The black sweater with the secondary logo on the front debuted in the 2008-09 season.
As of this season, the Bruins' new alternate uniform will be the one used for the 2016 NHL Winter Classic last season at Gillette Stadium. It was most recently worn for a home game back on March 3. The crests on both jerseys take inspiration from the Bs' original 1924 sweater.
To my knowledge, the team has not yet released a third jersey schedule for this season but if they do, I'll add it to the Jersey Calendar, accessible from the Extras menu at the top of the page.
Over the weekend we got what might be a sneak peek at jersey the Toronto Maple Leafs will wear to the NHL Centennial Classic on Jan. 1, 2017 at BMO Field.
During a video about Matt Martin, footage shows the throwback jerseys hanging outside the team's locker room. One stood out. It appears to be a Toronto Arenas jerseys in the same Reebok Edge style used for the Bruins and Canadiens Winter Classic jerseys last season — the round collar and felt crest application are obvious.
But, as we know, the Leafs have not worn an Arenas jersey in the Reebok Edge era, so that fact that this exists suggests it will be used for the New Year's Day game. Earlier reports in our NHL JerseyWatch coverage also have the Leafs donning a St. Pats jersey this season — during their 100th anniversary — but the one picture above pre-dates Reebok.
For a better look at the jerseys hanging in that hallway, check out these photos.
I've added both of these sweaters to our 2016-17 NHL Jersey Gallery.
