San Jose's new AHL team may share name with sponsor
This is an inconvenient day for news of the leaked variety. But it seems to be true nevertheless.
The Silicon Valley Business Journal reported today it has learned the name and logo that will be used by the San Jose Sharks' AHL affiliate when the franchise moves to California next season.
Prepare yourself for the San Jose Barracuda! (I mentioned that name as a possibility back in January when the relocation was first announced.)
The logo is aesthetically similar to the NHL club, so it's not a stretch to believe this is the real deal. What intrigues me, though, is the teal swooshes in the background of the design.
It's actually the logo of Barracuda Networks, a network security company based in the Bay Area and corporate sponsor of the San Jose Sharks.
The Journal suggests that the company will be the AHL club's "presenting sponsor" — which explains why they would be named "Barracuda" and not the plural "Barracudas."
The Worcester Sharks will depart Massachusetts at the end of the season and will begin sharing the SAP Center with their NHL parent club in the fall.
Nothing's official yet, but what do you make of all this? I'm curious to hear feedback on the idea of merging a sponsor with a team identity.
